Teen drivers caught on insurance dashcams fucking up, mostly because they can't put down their phones.

Why do I feel like I'm the only teen that doesn't text and drive? Granted I hardly use my phone when I'm at home because I'm usually on my laptop but it just seems silly. I also usually have it silenced so I don't get the notifications while on the road, which helps me keep my phone out of my mind and focus on my driving.

Another reason why we desperately need European style (Scandinavian to be specific) driver training before getting a license. I would gladly put myself through such a program (no grandfathering) just to know that most everyone on the road around me knows what the hell they're doing and take it seriously..

What a bunch of morons. I hate these people because they put the rest of us at risk.

You're not the only one (I always keep my phone in the centre console). It's just we hear a lot more about the kids who fuck up than the ones who don't, because not fucking up is kind of expected.

you certainly aren't. I don't T&D either, and the only times I look at my phone is when I'm using it as a GPS or answering a hands-free call. It's often on a stand.

I don't think punching them in the temple would do anything. It's not like there's any outward appearance of anything going on in there to be affected by your punch.
A text message/Facebook notification/Twitter message/etc... are still going to be there when you get to your destination or when you pull over when safe to do so to read it.
People are idiots.

Keep it up. If you need motivation remember that drivers 16-19 have 3 times more fatalities in auto accidents than any other age group. The highest percentage of accidents in that age group are from driver distraction.

or maybe just a "enhanced driver" license with that sort of thing.

and this is why kids should have manual transmissions.
That will 1 keep both hand busy, and 2 make them actually THINK about driving. Maybe. at least while driving in town.

To be fair, when I was learning to drive cellphones/plans were still considered an expense that wasn't needed (according to my parents) and my first car was a 5spd manual. Even so, I took driving pretty seriously even back then...and didn't want to add any more scratches or dings to my 6 year old Civic. I'm sure I fiddled with the stereo a bit too much however..

Another category to add is the drowsy driver. About a month ago I heard a loud impact-like sound while I was in my garage. This 'adult' had crossed the road and hit the curb on my property. Broke the 7" curb and most of the front of the Hyundai they were driving.
Excuse: "I was trying to get home so I could sleep. I left Ohio yesterday and drove all the way."

nice idea, but sadly doesn't work. Trust me, I'm in the UK where the majority of cars are manuals, I still see countless assholes on their phones. They just take their hands off the wheel to change gear.
These people shouldn't be allowed to breed.

I've never heard of an insurance dash cam before. Are these something that people volunteer for to lower their insurance payments (like the Progressive snapshot), or just something the companies do on a limited basis to gather data?

Insurance cams are put into a person's car because they have too many speeding tickets, wrecks, and/or DUIs. The insurance company is trying to prove to the courts that the drivers are a hazard on the road and get the driver's licence suspended/revoked. The insurance cams also try to reduce insurance fraud.

Ah ok, I had never heard about that. I guess it makes sense that they would capture all sorts of idiotic behavior then since they're sampling some of the worst drivers.

I have been known to put one hand out the window and the other for wheels / gear shift. I'll go hang my head in shame now.
